The Verne Local Nature Reserve Trail

Portland walks

The peaceful slopes of the Verne and Old Hill were once the scene of a remarkable reshaping of the landscape, creating a fascinating heritage of industrial archaeology such as The Merchant’s Railway and the Victorian High Angle Battery and natural history such as the undisturbed flowery limestone grassland. The land has been declared a Local Nature Reserve by Weymouth and Portland Borough Council in recognition of its value for wildlife and local people.
